Psychotherapeutic strategies to assist family practitioners
Between September and December 2008 Devon Family Solutions Ltd is providing a number of training workshops by Professor Janet Reibstein (a registered systemic psychotherapist and supervisor) to assist family practitioners in dealing with psychological dilemmas encountered with clients on either a one to one basis or in the family mediation or collaborative process.
Structure of the training sessions:
Working in a group, those attending will bring case studies (situations which might have caused difficulties) which can then be deconstructed with guidance from Prof. Reibstein through drawing on psychology principles and research, to help us as practitioners increase and draw on already developed strategies and frameworks for thinking about our cases, to enable us to deal with similar types of situations in the future.
Examples of sample areas for case discussions:
- Clients using emotional blackmail against the other partner (directly or indirectly);
- Clients wanting to use their children as pawns to score a point;
- Clients not able to see the possible emotional damage that might arise from arrangements proposed;
- Clients using their solicitors to provide them with emotional support;
- The entrenched client;
- Unresolved adult conflict restricting settlement.
These are just some of the issues that we deal with on a regular basis as family practitioners. By discussing these issues and exploring strategies from a psychological angle we should be in a better position to help our clients.
